Shubman Gill Emphasizes Aggressive Powerplay Strategy for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025
As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season approaches, Gujarat Titans’ captain Shubman Gill has outlined his intent to adopt a more aggressive approach during the powerplay overs. Reflecting on the previous season, where the Titans had the lowest run rate (7.72) in the first six overs and finished eighth, Gill emphasized the need for a strategic shift to maximize early scoring opportunities.
“The plan is to score as many runs as possible, and lose as few wickets as possible,” Gill stated during the team’s pre-season press conference. “We did not perform well in the powerplay or subsequent phases last season. We couldn’t play the way we wanted to, and that is evident in our failure to qualify for the playoffs. As a batsman, it is my responsibility to bat in a way that allows us to maximize the powerplay. That is what I strive for, and hopefully, this time we rectify the errors from last season.”
Gill also addressed the high-scoring nature of IPL 2024, which saw eight scores of 250 or more. However, he cautioned against a one-size-fits-all approach to setting targets. “I don’t think as a team we’re trying to chase 300 as a total. That’s not what our aim is,” he explained. “We will assess the conditions and the situation, and play accordingly. If the wicket or situation allows us to make 240, 250, or 260 runs, we are open to that, but there might be situations where 150 or 160 would be an ideal total. The hallmark of a great team is its ability to adapt to suitable conditions and the challenges presented.”
Reflecting on his inaugural season as captain, Gill acknowledged the learning curve and expressed his commitment to growth. “It was my first year as captain, so there were a lot of things I could learn from,” he noted. “The challenging aspect is discovering new things about a player or even about yourself. There were areas I needed to work on to become a good captain. I’ve played under various captains, each with different qualities, and I aim to incorporate those that resonate with me as a person.”
Despite the setbacks of the previous season, Gill remains optimistic, drawing confidence from the Titans’ overall record in the IPL. “If you look at our record over the past three years, we are the team with the most wins and the highest percentage of wins,” he highlighted. “If we continue to do that, it’s going to be another great season for us. Just because it’s a new season doesn’t mean we have to do anything different. I think over the past three years, we have played the most consistent cricket. We don’t need to change anything. We’ll continue to play the cricket that we have been playing.”
As IPL 2025 approaches, Gill’s focus on enhancing the Titans’ powerplay performance underscores the team’s commitment to strategic adaptability and consistent excellence.
